Information on Special Committee on Social Service Program
Savings
There is a new committee meeting to discuss the funding,
structure, and eligibility for the social services programs
offered in the state of Missouri. For more information visit
http://www.senate.mo.gov/12info/comm/special/ssps.htm
Now is the time to reach out to Committee Chair, Senator
Rob Schaaf. Tell him how important funding for people with
developmental disabilities is to our community. Tell him how
these individuals are active members of society and how much
they benefit from needed supports, employment, affordable
housing, etc. Tell him your story.
LOOK! AN EASY & AFFORDABLE WAY
TO SUPPORT INDIVIDUALS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES
Beginning January 1, 2011, an individual or corporation may
designate at least $1 on a Missouri individual income tax
return or at least $2 on a combined return of his or her tax
refund amount to the Developmental Disabilities Waiting List
Equity Trust Fund.
A taxpayer may also donate to this fund by sending a separate
check with the payment of his or her taxes.
The fund shall be a dedicated fund and, upon appropriation,
money in the fund shall be used solely for the administration
of this section and for providing community services and support
to people with developmental disabilities and such person's
families who are on the developmental disabilities waiting
list and are eligible for but not receiving services.
New DD Bill Needs Your Help to Pass
Senator Luann Ridgeway, the Chair of the Senate Health, Mental
Health, Seniors & Families Committee needs to hear from
you.
HB 555 is a landmark bill that creates the following (adapted
from Cathy Brown of MPCDD):
- The DD Waiting List Equity Trust Fund- adds a check off
box on taxes so people can donate to help people on the
DD waiting list. (Standalone bill – HB631 is currently
in the Senate)
- Making October Disability History and Awareness Month
in Schools
- Removal of “MR” and the “H-word”
from many State Statutes
- Mandates that all new parking signs be labeled as "Accessible"
rather than "Handicapped."
- Adds Day Rehab Services for people with Brain Injury
- Adds a Mental Health Professional to the MO HealthNet
Oversight Committee
- Changes the rules regarding Service Dogs
- Makes it Illegal to Discriminate against People with
Disabilities when it comes to Parental Rights.
- And makes changes to the Mental Health Earnings Fund
We need Senator Ridgeway to schedule HB 555 for a hearing
within the Health,
Mental Health, Seniors & Families Committee in which
she is Chair.
You can contact Senator Ridgeway at:
201 W Capitol Ave., Rm. 221
Jefferson City, Missouri 65101
(573) 751-2547
Or send her an email by visiting her at http://www.senate.mo.gov/webmail/D17_Webmail.aspx
There is no time to waste. Session is quickly coming to a
close and unless this historic bill is voted out of this committee
and voted on in the Senate, the bill will die.
